How To Prepare For Liposuction Surgery?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that aims at removing fat from different body parts of the human body. Typical areas where liposuctions are generally performed include the abdomen, the hips and the thighs. These areas store fat that is notoriously difficult to remove. Accumulation of fat in these places is also quite unsightly. Like any operation, the liposuction procedure requires a minimum of preparation to be successful and to minimize unwanted effects. Ideally, the patient should begin preparing for the intervention many months before the scheduled date of the operation. Once the patient has decided to have a liposuction, he must schedule an appointment with a qualified plastic surgeon. The choice of the appropriate surgeon is certainly the first step in a successful procedure. A doctor with at least two years experience as a plastic surgeon should be chosen. Once a doctor is chosen, he will undertake an evaluation of which areas to be targeted. An in-depth planning session will be carried out with the patient. Following this session, a date for the operation will be set and instructions given to the patient on how to prepare for the intervention.

Two to Four months before surgery

The patient should stop smoking completely, if he/she is a smoker. This is because nicotine interferes with blood circulation and thus may give rise to complications during the operation.

Two weeks before surgery

All forms of aspirin should be avoided. Generally, all medication that you take should receive the approval of the surgeon. This is because certain medications may interfere with the blood’s ability to clot. Usually, all anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen or naproxen) should be avoided. Thyroid medications, anti-depressants and various antibiotics should also be avoided. This includes types of vitamins and mineral supplements.

The doctor may instruct you to start taking iron supplements at this stage.

The preoperative evaluation is carried out. This consists of blood tests, analysis of medical history, and physical condition. Measurements of the areas to be operated are taken. Photographs may also be taken.

The Day before Surgery

Minor preparations must be undertaken so that the patient does not have anything to worry after the operation. Some things to remember include:

Getting adequate rest

(iv)

Avoid eating anything after midnight (if general anaesthesia will be performed)

The Day of the Surgery

In general, stress should be avoided. Nothing should be eaten before surgery.
