There are a number of reasons to consider having a breast augmentation. For some women breast augmentation means improved self confidence and self esteem. Yet for others it is a way to reclaim their feeling of femininity. Whether you want to fill out your blouse better, restore your breast to pre-pregnancy fullness or you have had a mastectomy or injury that has caused you to loose one or both of your breasts, breast augmentation can help you feel content with who you are as a woman again.

Not all of us were fortunate to have born with an ideal, perfectly proportionate body. This is something that can be addressed by a breast augmentation, if your breasts are felt to be out of proportion to your body. This is not an uncommon concern; it is not only wanting to look good in that little black dress that makes women feel the need for a breast augmentation procedure. No matter why you are considering the surgery, talking to your doctor about it should be the first step.

Why should you go for a consultation even if you aren’t sure that you want the surgery done? Simple, the doctor will sit and talk with you and get a better understanding of who you are and what it is you want to change and why. This isn’t like going to the hair stylist and changing your hair style or color. This is about you being more comfortable and more confident with who you are and happy with what you see in the mirror.

You’ll also learn during the consultation process what breast augmentation can actually accomplish. You’ll find out if your expectations are realistic for the results of the surgery. Your doctor in any case can educate you all about the options that exist.

You’re going to want to think about one very important thing. Namely, why is it exactly that you are considering breast augmentation. Is it for you, or are you doing this for someone else? It is your body, and ultimately it is you that the procedure should be done, or not done in the interests of. If you’re doing this to please someone else, take a minute and step back while you consider more carefully.

Your doctor is going to make some evaluations about your general health before undertaking this procedure. You need to be reasonably healthy if you are going to have an elective surgical procedure such as this performed. You will also of course, need to be an adult; if your breasts are still developing, a breast augmentation makes little sense at this point. Again, discuss in detail with your doctor about whether your expectations are realistic.

Be prepared to be completely honest with yourself, and with your doctor about everything relating to the surgery. Know exactly why you want this done, and be prepared to tell your physician. This is a serious step and thusly no time to sidestep anything relevant to your reasoning about the procedure, and what you want to gain from it.

At your consultation you need to be ready to discuss with your doctor when you want to have the surgery. You need to fully disclose any and medical conditions you have and are being treated for. Make sure if you are taking medications you bring a list of them with you. This list needs to include any holistic and natural supplements that you are taking. Be prepared to tell of any other surgeries you have had and if you have any family history of breast cancer as well as any results from any mammograms or breast related surgeries you have had.

Then with all issues, facts and options out in the open, you and your doctor will be able to make an informed and intelligent decision about your plans for breast augmentation.
